Worldwide, the petroleum refining industry processes about 82 million barrels of crude oil each day, including about 17 million barrels per day refined in the US, according to the BP Statistical Review of World Energy. The countries with the largest refining throughput are the US, China, Russia, India, Japan, and South Korea. HPCL's Refineries use energy in various forms viz., fuel, steam, electricity, etc. in different processing units to convert crude oil to valuable petroleum products. Most of these refinery processes are energy intensive and use part of the finished products produced in the refinery to derive their energy requirement.

The petroleum refining industry's energy savings in are presented in three recent studies. The lowest estimate of 5% of energy savings is provided by McKinsey and Company (). The intermediate range of savings, between 12% and 24%, was published in a study by LBNL ().   An industrial energy manager can conserve energy in a number of ways. He can turn off energy loads, turn down energy intensity, install more energy efficient equipment, insulate tanks and pipe lines, recover and reuse energy, convert batch processes into continuous processes, or optimize the efficiency of converting fuel energy into a distributable medium (i.e., Cited by: 1.

Maintaining the viability of the U.S. petroleum refining industry requires continuous improvement in productivity and energy efficiency. The U.S. refining industry has worked with AMO to provide a range of resources that can provide energy and cost savings for the industry.

Chapter 5 The Petroleum Refining Industry INDUSTRY OVERVIEW The petroleum refining industry uses the largest quantity of premium fuels in the industrial sec-tor, amounting to 2,7 Quads in ’ It is sec-ond only to the chemicals industry in the total amount of energy it consumes.

Classified under the petroleum refining industry is. This guide introduces energy efficiency opportunities available for petroleum refineries. It begins with descriptions of the trends, structure, and production of the refining industry and the energy used in the refining and conversion processes.

Specific energy savings for each energy efficiency measure based on case studies of plants and references to technical literature are provided. Robett A.

Meyers was manager of Chemical Process Technology at TRW and is now President of RAMTECH Limited. A resident of Redondo Beach, CA, Dr. Meyers is the inventor or co-inventor of a number of broadly used engineering processes, and has managed projects in nearly every facet of the petroleum refining by: Petroleum Refining: An Essential and Volatile Industry.

Petroleum is the single largest source of energy for the United States. When measured in British thermal units (Btu), the Nation relies on petroleum two times more than either coal or natural gas, and four times more than nuclear power, hydroelectricity, and other renewable energy.

@article{osti_, title = {The potential for reducing energy utilization in the refining industry}, author = {Petrick, M and Pellegrino, J}, abstractNote = {The paper first discusses energy use in petroleum refineries and CO{sub 2} emissions because of the fuels used.

Then the paper looks at near- mid- and long-term opportunities for energy reduction. In addition, the current on-going CE practices into Chinese petroleum refining industry are only focused on the energy conservation from a technical perspective [24][25][26][27] [ Petroleum refining is the most energy-intensive manufacturing industry in the United States.

According to the most recent Manufacturing Energy Consumption Survey (MECs) conducted by the U.S. Department of Energy, the U.S. petroleum refining industry consumed quads (quadrillion Btu, or 10 15 Btu) of energy in (excluding. The petroleum industry is enormous and its activities extend over all regions of the world. Given the wide ranging nature of this industry, it is important to define the scope of activities which this book is concerned with.

Petroleum refining involves refining crude petroleum as well as producing raw materials for the petrochemical industry. This book covers current refinery processes and process-types that are likely to come on-stream during the next three to five decades.

Petroleum refining is a highly energy-intensive process using both purchased energy (gas and electricity) and byproduct streams from the refining processes. Energy use accounts for approximately 50% of refining costs. Petroleum — Industry of the Future health and profitability of the industry.

Petroleum refining is unique among manufacturing industries from an energy stand-point. It is the country’s single largest source of energy products, supplying 40 per- concerns about emissions and energy conservation.

A key industry priority is. Relentless efforts towards energy conservation on a sustained basis have resulted in significant saving of energy and natural resources. BPCL Mumbai Refinery has a very robust and effective Energy Management System (EnMS) accredited with ISO certification since and is one of the first refineries to achieve this landmark.

An oil refinery or petroleum refinery is an industrial process plant where crude oil is transformed and refined into more useful products such as petroleum naphtha, gasoline, diesel fuel, asphalt base, heating oil, kerosene, liquefied petroleum gas, jet fuel and fuel oils.

Petrochemicals feed stock like ethylene and propylene can also be produced directly by cracking crude oil without. Using this ranking method, the petroleum refining industry appeared in seventh place among the 13 industry segments being studied.

The refining industry consumed about quads in (see Table ES-1), 11% of the 27 quads purchased by all industries. Petroleum refining is the manufacturing step in the production of hydrocarbon-based fuels. The average annual rate of growth of energy in the U.S.

industrial sector is projected to be percent out towhile CO 2 emissions from U.S. industry are projected to increase more slowly, at percent annually (EIA, ). These low rates are due partly to the presumed introduction of energy-efficient technologies and practices in.Efficiency and conservation are different but related.

The terms energy efficiency and energy conservation have distinct meanings. Energy efficiency is using technology that requires less energy to perform the same function. Using a light-emitting diode (LED) light bulb or a compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulb that requires less energy than an incandescent light bulb to .
